Scientists at the University of Iowa found in a study that men's noses are, on average, 10 percent larger than women's. During childhood, boys' and girls' noses are very similar, but from puberty onward, hormones influence them differently – testosterone leads to greater muscle growth in adolescent men and, consequently, to a more pronounced nose. A larger nose can supply the muscles with oxygen better than a smaller one. A large nose is therefore generally considered a sign of masculinity.

Nevertheless, there are changes in the shape of the male nose that are detrimental to both aesthetics and function. Most commonly, we encounter patients in our practice with drooping nasal tips, disproportionately long noses, humped noses, crooked noses, or combinations of these shapes.

Different problems for men and women

It's not uncommon for men to suffer broken noses as a result of their sporting activities, which further affects the shape of the nose. These misalignments after a broken nose can also be corrected with a rhinoplasty.

Men generally don't want a small, upturned nose, but rather a symmetrical, straight, and distinctive nose that fits their face.

Men are often more critical and demanding when presenting for a consultation for a rhinoplasty. This makes it all the more important that patient and practitioner communicate on the same level and that expectations are realistic and clear. A detailed consultation, including simulations, can help with this.

My surgical techniques

The surgical techniques are similar to those used for "regular" rhinoplasty. We also use a variety of techniques for male rhinoplasty to achieve the desired result. We always choose the most gentle approach possible for a perfect long-term result.

Gentle techniques include the use of piezo instruments to avoid breaking bone, but rather to work on it precisely and gently. This also includes the removal of humps using the so-called push-down or let-down technique. This technique preserves the anatomy of the nasal bridge, which is simply repositioned further into the plane of the face and reshaped to maintain a straight nasal bridge and improve breathing. For severely crooked noses, I achieve the best results with the so-called push-over technique.

If the nasal tip is unstable or drooping, it must be reinforced. In Hamburg, I favor stabilization with septal extension grafts, as this cartilage graft ensures the nasal tip remains stable even after many years.

Frequently asked questions about male rhinoplasty

  • How can a man's nose be reduced?

A man's nose reduction is performed using the same techniques as a woman's. However, there are some differences in the procedure: For example, the angle between the upper lip and the nasal bridge is always less pronounced than in a woman's, and a man's nose should not be too short or "snub" – all characteristics of a more feminine nose. Most men want a distinctive, straight nose that is neither too short nor too long.

  • How does a man's nose work?

Preparation for rhinoplasty, such as consultation and explanation, takes place on an outpatient basis in our practice. On the day of surgery, our patients are received at the clinic and cared for by our surgical team, ensuring the operation can be performed in a relaxed and calm atmosphere. We will also take care of you after the surgery and want to make your stay as pleasant as possible.
Men can be discharged home the very next day after a rhinoplasty. However, physical rest is still required, as after the surgery, the important wound healing phase begins, which should proceed as undisturbed as possible.
Depending on the extent of the surgery and individual predisposition, swelling and discoloration in the facial area may occur, which usually disappears after 2 weeks.
The external nasal splint is removed after 1 week. I generally do not use packings placed inside the nose. Sutures are absorbable.

  • What risks does the surgery entail?

The risks of a nose job in men are low when performed by a nose job expert. Swelling and discoloration of the skin subside after a few days. Postoperative bleeding is extremely rare and usually occurs within the first 24 hours – the time our patients are intensively monitored in the clinic. Treatment is then possible without difficulty. If the nose has already undergone previous surgery, there is an increased risk of bending and skin changes due to scar tissue and reduced stability.

  • How much does nose surgery for men cost?

The cost of a nose job for men depends on the complexity of the surgery and starts at €6,450.
