The hump nose is a common nose shape and is characterized by a bridge of the nose that bends upwards. This is often combined with a drooping tip of the nose.

The nose can have a strong visual impact on the entire face, a hump in particular is often perceived as disturbing and is the most common reason for cosmetic rhinoplasty.

A hump on the nose is caused by irregular growth, possibly congenital or caused by an accident in childhood. The external deformation of the nose often also includes a bending of the inner nose, which impairs nasal breathing.

Why correct a hump nose?

The prominence of a humped nose is particularly noticeable when viewed from the side. This nose shape often occurs with a drooping nasal tip. This combination makes the nose appear larger and more dominant. Furthermore, a humped nose can make the face look older and "harder." Many people therefore perceive a humped nose as unsightly or an aesthetic problem. The desire for rhinoplasty is therefore widespread, especially when functional limitations such as breathing problems or other conditions are present, as is the case with a tension nose. In most cases, however, the decision to remove a hump is based on aesthetic or psychological reasons. The conspicuous shape of the nose is often perceived as disturbing and can significantly impair the self-esteem of those affected.

Goal and Process

The aim of hump nose surgery is to visually remove the hump. There are different techniques for this. The simplest technique is to simply cut or chisel away the hump. However, this technique is not recommended, as the bridge of the nose can often become irregular after the operation and the nose as a whole can become unstable. It is much more advisable and stable if the hump visually disappears by reshaping the cartilage or by lowering the entire bridge of the nose. This maintains the stability of the nose and gives a natural and smooth bridge of the nose.

Of course, when correcting a hump, the nasal septum is also straightened, thus improving breathing through the nose. Adjusting the tip of the nose during surgical nose correction is also very important for the harmonious interaction of the tip and the bridge. This is because a correction of the tip can perfect the result after the removal of a hump.

At the end of the operation, the nose is stabilized with an external splint. Tamponades are not necessary for nose corrections in our practice in Hamburg.

Alternative: Hyaluronic Acid

As an alternative to surgical nose correction, the hump can also be concealed using hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid is injected into the nose in front of and behind the hump. However, this cannot make the nose smaller; it can actually make it a little larger. Restrictions on nasal breathing are also not possible with a non-surgical nose correction. In addition, the result is not permanent - the treatment with hyaluronic acid must be carried out regularly for a consistent result.

Risks of hump nose surgery

The risks of surgical nose correction are very low in experienced hands. Swelling and discoloration in the facial area often occur after the operation, but disappear after about 2 weeks. In the first few hours after the operation, bleeding can very rarely occur, but this can easily be stopped by an experienced team.

In the following weeks, the nose stabilizes as the wound heals. After about 6 weeks, the bony part of the nose is firm enough that you can slowly start exercising again. The last small swellings disappear over the following months, so the final result can be expected after a year.

Extremely satisfied! I was always treated very kindly and competently by Dr. Wilke. The correction of my crooked nose with a hump and what appeared to be a very deviated nasal septum went exactly as previously discussed. I have a great result and can highly recommend Dr. Henryk Wilke.

Frequently asked questions about correcting a hump nose

  • What causes a hump nose?

Most hump noses are probably genetic, but accidents involving the nose in childhood are also possible causes.

  • What methods are available for hump nose surgery?

In principle, there is the simple removal/chiseling off of the hump and, in contrast, the removal of the hump while preserving the bridge of the nose, which is carried out in my practice. In almost every case I use piezo for gentle remodeling of the nose.

  • Can a hump nose be treated with hyaluronic acid?

A nose correction without surgery is possible with hyaluronic acid. The hyaluronic acid is applied in front of and behind the hump and the bridge of the nose is optically straightened. However, this makes the nose slightly larger and the treatment must be repeated regularly.

  • How long does it take to remove a hump?

Normally a rhinoplasty for a hump nose takes about 2 hours.

  • What needs to be considered before and after rhinoplasty for a hump nose?

In order to make the conditions for the operation as optimal as possible, no medication such as Aspirin®, Diclofenac®, Ibuprofen®, and Voltaren® should be taken 2 weeks before the operation. Smoking reduces the blood flow to the small vessels, which are important for wound healing, so we recommend that you stop smoking during the healing phase. Good care of the nasal mucosa promotes healing both before and after the operation. We recommend starting nose care with ointments and oils one week before the operation. After the operation, a cast is applied, which is removed after one week. Tamponades are not necessary after rhinoplasty. We recommend that you refrain from sport for 6 weeks. Glasses should not be worn during this time.

  • Is a rhinoplasty for a hump nose painful?

Most of our patients in Hamburg have little to no pain after a nose job.

  • What are the risks of removing a nasal hump?

The risks of rhinoplasty for a hump nose are low with a rhinoplasty expert. Swelling and discoloration of the skin disappear after a few days. Bleeding after surgery is extremely rare and usually occurs in the first 24 hours - the time during which my patients are closely monitored in the clinic. Treatment is then possible without difficulty.

  • How much does it cost to remove a nasal hump?

The cost of an operation is calculated based on the difficulty and duration. A rhinoplasty for a hump nose starts at 6450 euros.
