People with a long nose are often bothered by the fact that it visually dominates the middle of the face - other features, such as beautiful eyes and cheeks, are less noticeable. A long nose is characterized by a long bridge, which means that the nose protrudes disproportionately far from the face. A long nose is often genetic and is not the result of an accident. A long nose is usually caused by a sunken tip, which can also lead to a deterioration in breathing.

The correction of a long nose can vary greatly depending on the extent of the operation: from shortening the nasal septum to straightening the tip of the nose or completely reducing the size of the nose, an individual surgical plan is drawn up for each patient.

The more pronounced the long nose, the more complex techniques are required for nose correction. In addition to external correction, every good nose surgeon also focuses on improving function or at least maintaining nasal breathing. Deviations of the nasal septum are corrected, as are enlarged cavernous bodies in the nose, the so-called nasal turbinates. In the case of long noses that have already been broken, very complex techniques such as extracorporeal septum correction may be necessary, in which the extremely crooked nasal septum is completely removed and reinserted after straightening. A stable and straight nasal septum is the basic requirement for a straight and well-functioning external nose. In the case of bone fractures, more complex corrections to the bony nose are also usually necessary.

Procedure for correcting a long nose

To ensure good symmetry, open access to the nose is usually chosen when correcting a long nose. Basically, only a small incision on the bridge of the nose distinguishes the open from the closed access to the nose. This access provides the best overview of the misalignment. In most cases, long noses can be corrected without additional cartilage, for example from the auricle or rib. The goal is always a smaller nose that fits proportionally into the face. There are big differences between the sexes: a female nose can be smaller and "snubbier", whereas a male nose can certainly be made smaller, but must still retain its distinctive character.

As with all nose corrections, the skin is an important factor in the subsequent appearance of the nose and unfortunately is often the main limitation in a nose reduction - the nose can only be reduced as much as the skin covering the nose can shrink. Thick skin in particular does not contract much after an operation.

To immobilize the nose after surgery, an external splint is applied, which is removed after about 1 week. After this time, most swelling and skin discoloration will have disappeared. Similar to other nose corrections, the final result can be expected after a wound healing phase of about 1 year, with most progress happening in the first few weeks.

Patient reviews

Great result and a very competent doctor

I am delighted with the entire process! The consultation was completely different to other practices, because here I was not immediately pressured to have the operation straight away. I was examined and then given detailed information about the possibilities and limitations of a nose job. Dr. Wilke took a lot of time and obviously enjoyed his work. I immediately felt comfortable and safe.

I am super satisfied!

I can only say a huge thank you to Dr. Wilke. I am very happy with my new nose and can finally breathe freely again. Dr. Wilke spent a lot of time with me and my wishes during the preliminary consultation, explained things well to me and gave me a lot of security through his empathy.

Totally thrilled!

In January 21 I had my first consultation with Dr. Wilke. My first impression was positive - nice team, beautiful practice and an honest consultation!

In September 21, I had another consultation with Dr. Wilke and the nose surgery took place in the same month. The result is great! I still can't believe that I have such a great nose for the first time in my life!

Thanks to Dr. Wilke, but of course also to the entire team for the great care!

Frequently asked questions about correcting a long nose

  • What causes a long nose?

A long nose is usually genetic. However, the tip of the nose can also sink with age, making the nose appear longer.

  • What does a long nose look like?

The long nose protrudes much further from the face than other nose shapes. The long nose is often combined with a drooping nose tip, which further enhances the external appearance.

  • How can a drooping nasal tip be corrected?

To correct a drooping nasal tip, the cartilage that is largely responsible for the shape of the nasal tip is reshaped so that the tip of the nose is straightened. This not only corrects the nasal tip, but also reduces the length of the nose. Often, the nasal septum, which is too long, also needs to be corrected.

  • How long does it take to correct a long nose?

Similar to other rhinoplasties, the operation takes an average of two hours and can be slightly shorter or longer depending on the complexity involved.

  • What needs to be considered before and after long nose correction?

In order to make the conditions for the operation as optimal as possible, no medication such as Aspirin®, Diclofenac®, Ibuprofen®, and Voltaren® should be taken 2 weeks before the operation. Smoking reduces the blood flow to the small vessels that are important for wound healing, so we recommend stopping smoking during the healing phase. Good care of the nasal mucosa promotes healing both before and after the operation. We recommend starting nose care with ointments and oils one week before the operation. After the operation, a cast is applied. It is removed after 1-2 weeks together with the stitches on the bridge of the nose. Tampons are not necessary to correct a long nose. We recommend refraining from sport for 6 weeks. Glasses should not be worn during this time.

  • Is correcting a drooping nose tip painful?

The surgical correction of a drooping nasal tip or a long nose is performed under general anesthesia, so that no pain is felt during the operation. After the operation, most patients have little to no pain.

  • What are the risks of long nose surgery?

The risks of a rhinoplasty for a long nose are low when performed by a rhinoplasty expert. Swelling and discoloration of the skin disappear after a few days. Post-operative bleeding is extremely rare and usually occurs in the first 24 hours - the time during which our patients are closely monitored in the clinic. Treatment is then possible without any problems. If the nose has already been operated on, there is an increased risk of bending and skin changes due to scar tissue and reduced stability.

  • How much does it cost to correct a long nose?

The costs of a rhinoplasty for a long nose depend on the complexity of the operation and start at 6450 euros.
